Tesla Pre-Purchase Inspection Guide: What We Actually Check (2026)

Buying a used Tesla is one of the best financial decisions you can make in 2026 — if you buy the right car. The wrong one can cost you $5,000–$15,000+ in the first year. A proper independent Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) is the single highest-ROI step you can take.

At EV PRO we perform thorough Tesla PPIs every week for buyers across the South Bay. Here’s exactly what a real specialist inspection covers (and why a free “look-over” at a dealership or a basic OBD scan is not enough).

1. High-Voltage Battery Health (The Most Important Part)

This is where most money is made or lost. We don’t just read the percentage on the screen.

  • Full pack capacity test and remaining usable kWh
  • Module-to-module voltage balance and internal resistance trends
  • Historical degradation patterns and any previous imbalance events
  • Contactor health and isolation resistance
  • Coolant system condition (leaks, contamination, pump performance)

A car showing 90% on the display can still have a weak module that will fail soon. We catch those.

2. Drive Unit & Powertrain

  • Road test for whine, grind, clunk, or vibration under load and deceleration
  • Inverter and motor temperature behavior
  • Half-shaft condition and CV joint play
  • Gearbox fluid condition when accessible
  • Any stored drive inverter or motor faults (even if currently inactive)

3. Thermal Management & HVAC

AC performance, heat pump operation (on equipped cars), octovalve function, cabin heater, and any thermal-related faults that foreshadow expensive repairs.

4. Suspension, Steering & Brakes

  • Control arm bushings, ball joints, and air suspension (if equipped)
  • Tire wear patterns that reveal alignment or component issues
  • Brake thickness and caliper condition
  • Any knocking or clunking over bumps

5. Body, Paint & Prior Collision Work

Paint thickness gauge readings across panels, panel gap consistency, evidence of respray or blending, and underbody inspection for accident repairs that weren’t disclosed.

6. Interior, Electronics & Software

  • MCU / screen performance and known failure signs
  • Autopilot / FSD computer version and camera health
  • 12V system and low-voltage battery condition
  • Door handles, charge port, mirrors, seats, and common wear items
  • Service history pull and open campaigns

EV PRO PPI Price: $200 flat. You receive a clear written report with photos, battery data, and a plain-English summary of risks and estimated future costs. Most inspections are completed same-day or next-day.

Why Independent PPI Beats Dealership “Inspection”

Dealerships are incentivized to sell cars and service. An independent specialist is incentivized only to tell you the truth. We have no inventory to move and no service department quota. That changes everything about the thoroughness and honesty of the report.

When to Book a PPI

  • Any used Tesla over 30,000 miles or 3 years old
  • Private party purchases (highest risk)
  • Cars that have been in an accident (even “minor”)
  • High-mileage or out-of-state cars
  • Before the 100-point or CPO inspection window closes
