Tesla drive units are sealed gearboxes with oil that lubricates gears and bearings and helps manage heat. They are not “maintenance-free forever” in the sense that fluid never ages — especially on higher-mileage cars, cars with known whine history, or units that have seen hard use or prior seal work.

What the fluid is doing
Inside the rear (and, on dual-motor cars, front) drive unit, gear oil:
- Lubricates helical gears and differential elements
- Protects bearings under load and deceleration
- Carries metal wear particles away from contact surfaces
- Contributes to thermal behavior under repeated hard acceleration
Over time, oil shears, picks up fine metal, and can darken. Seal aging can also allow contamination or level loss. None of that automatically means “replace the whole drive unit” — but it does mean the fluid condition is useful diagnostic evidence.
When fluid service is worth discussing
- Higher mileage (often past the point where owners first notice gear whine under light throttle)
- Audible whine, grind, or howl that changes with speed or load
- Clunk or shudder on tip-in / tip-out
- Prior seal, half-shaft, or drive-unit work
- PPI on a used car where you want gearbox condition documented
There is no universal Tesla “every X miles, change the oil” slogan that fits every Model 3/Y/S/X generation. Interval decisions should follow symptoms, mileage, inspection access, and what the manufacturer documentation and specialist experience say for that unit.
Symptoms that are not “just needs oil”
Fluid service will not fix:
- Failed bearings that already roar or grind under load
- Inverter faults, contactor issues, or HV isolation problems
- Half-shaft / CV joint clicks that owners mislabel as “gearbox”
- Wheel bearing or tire noise that tracks with road speed only
That’s why we road-test and scan before recommending fluid work. Guessing wastes money.

If you’re not near Santa Clara yet, async remote diagnostics can triage screenshots, videos of the noise, and Service Mode data (EN/PT/ES reports). A road test and hands-on inspection still require the car in the bay for definitive gearbox judgment. Equal weight: remote for triage and planning; in-shop for fluid/DU work.
