Why DU fluid matters
Not ICE engine oil. Gear fluid inside the sealed drive unit. Specialists already know it ages; most owners never see it on a sticker.
Reduction gearset oil
The motor spins; the gearset needs lubrication. DU fluid protects gears and bearings while managing heat at highway RPM.
Menus often skip it
Tesla doesn’t put a big “change the DU oil” reminder on the windshield. That silence is why this service gets neglected — not because the fluid is immortal.
Noise → wear risk
Aged fluid doesn’t mean doom tomorrow. It means lubrication thins where you need it, noise climbs, and wear can accelerate. Fresh fluid is preventative / restorative maintenance.
Cheaper than a DU
Fluid service is maintenance. A noisy or damaged drive unit is a project. We’d rather see South Bay cars early.
What’s included

- Correct fill / temperature procedure for the unit you’re running
- Leak check + road test when appropriate

- Tesla-focused shop · 1739 Grant St, Santa Clara, CA 95050
Pricing (honest)
Model 3 front + rear: $799 all-in (example used in shop quotes).
Other models / single DU / AWD configs: from $799 or book for a clear quote. We agree on the number before we touch a bolt.
Diagnostics (if you need root-cause on noise first): $199/hour. Payments: Square + Zelle 650-661-7440.
Who it’s for
- Model 3 / Model Y — most common F+R fluid services we quote; dual-motor configs typically need both units addressed.
- Model S / Model X — we service DU fluid as equipped; procedure and price depend on generation/config — book for quote.
- Higher-mileage or noisy cars — whine under load, growl on takeoff, or long highway metallic edge.
- Owners who want preventative care — even if Tesla never put it on a reminder card.
Honesty check: we do not invent recalls, promise a forever-silent car, or guarantee zero future DU failure. Fluid exists, ages, and servicing it is real maintenance.
FAQ
Is this a regular oil change?
No. Once: this is not ICE engine oil or a gas-station oil change. It is drive-unit gear oil for the reduction gearset inside the Tesla DU.
Why doesn’t Tesla always change it?
Owner-facing service menus often don’t highlight routine DU fluid service. Specialists still service the fluid because it ages with heat and miles — silence on a menu isn’t the same as “never needed.”
What does $799 cover?
Model 3 front + rear drive unit fluid service example quoted $799 all-in. Other configs: from $799 / quote. If diagnosis is required first, that’s $199/hr separate.
Should I book fluid or diagnosis first?
If the car is noisy, vibrating, or throwing inverter/motor faults, start with diagnosis so we don’t treat a mechanical issue as “just fluid.” Quiet cars wanting preventative service can book DU fluid directly.
